With the support of AYALA Foundation, three successful fetal surgeries were performed at the Center for Perinatology and Pediatric Cardiac Surgery in Almaty.

The doctors of the Center and Maxim Vladimirovich Beluga, the Head of the Fetal Medicine Department of the “Mother and Child” Minsk Republican Scientific and Practical Center performed intrauterine correction of fetal development in three pregnant women from Almaty city, Almaty and Akmola regions. Our Foundation supported the arrival of an international expert to assist the doctors in Kazakhstan.

For the first patient with a multiple pregnancy complicated by twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome, the surgens performed fetoscopic laser coagulation of placental anastomoses. As a result, the abnormal vascular connections between the fetuses were eliminated. This prevented serious complications and helped to save the lives of both twins.

The second patient underwent amnioreduction and amnioinfusion, which could regulate amniotic fluid volume, create optimal conditions for fetal development and lower the risk of complications.

The third patient underwent prenatal bladder drainage. This surgery prevented the development of renal failure, ensuring the normal functioning of the fetal urinary system and increasing the chances for healthy development.

According to the press release of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Kazakhstan, all the surgeries were successful, the patients are currently stable. Their pregnancies are continuously monitored by medical specialists.

These surgeries were possible thanks to the “Fetal Surgery” Project, which AYALA Charitable Foundation has been implementing since 2023 to support the state in the development of fetal medicine in Kazakhstan. Fetal surgery allows intrauterine correction and treatment of early pathological conditions in a fetus using minimally invasive procedures, while a baby is still in the womb. The first fetal surgeries were performed in June 2024 in Almaty and in July in Astana.
