Two doctors from Kazakhstan are currently completing a free two-week internship at Busan National University Hospital. The doctors, Sabina Smagulova, a paediatric ophthalmologist from the Perinatology and Paediatric Cardiac Surgery Centre in Almaty, and Olzhas Bainazarov, a traumatologist and orthopaedic surgeon from City Children’s Hospital No. 2 in Astana, are part of an annual training exchange.
Every year, Busan National University Hospital invites two Kazakhstani doctors for advanced medical training, covering all costs, including accommodation, local travel, and meals. The AYALA Foundation funds their flights to and from South Korea.
Since the partnership with BNUH began in 2016, 26 Kazakhstani doctors have trained in Busan, enhancing their skills in a variety of medical specialities.
Sabina Smagulova is specialising in laser surgery of the posterior segment of the eye and paediatric neuro-ophthalmology. “This is a fantastic opportunity to exchange clinical experience with international colleagues in the management and treatment of ophthalmological patients,” she said.
Olzhas Bainazarov, who is focusing on arthroscopy, limb deformity surgery, and scar removal following burns and trauma, is grateful for the chance to work alongside renowned experts: “I am deeply thankful to Professors Lee Jong-Seop and Ahn Dae-Yong for sharing their knowledge on diagnostic and treatment methods. This internship is incredibly important to me, and I look forward to applying everything I’ve learned to help patients in Kazakhstan.”
